The 2023-24 Figure Skating Season

The 2023-24 Figure Skating Season Overview

The 2023-24 figure skating season commenced on July 1, 2023, and will conclude on June 30, 2024. This season features several prestigious international competitions, including:

  • ISU Challenger Series (CS) - The ISU Challenger Series was introduced in 2014 as a series of international Figure Skating Competitions organized by ISU Members. Supported by the ISU, its objective is to ensure the proper and consistent organization of up to ten International Competitions linked together within the Challenger Series. This initiative provides ample opportunities for many skaters to compete at the international senior level and earn World Standing Points. Additionally, the Series enhances opportunities for officials to gain experience in officiating at an international level.

  • Junior Grand Prix (JGP) - The ISU Junior Grand Prix of Figure Skating Series commenced in 1997 and consists of seven events culminating with the ISU Junior Grand Prix of Figure Skating Final. This series showcases the next generation of promising young figure skaters, aged 13 to 19 (21 for male ice dance and pair skating partners), from Europe, North and South America, Asia, Oceania, and Africa. It provides these skaters with the opportunity to compete at a high international level.

A points system, based on rankings, determines the qualifiers for the ISU Junior Grand Prix of Figure Skating Final. Points are earned based on results from each of the seven events, and only the top six skaters/couples in each discipline can qualify for the Final. The ISU Junior Grand Prix of Figure Skating is financed by the ISU Development Program.

Since 2011, all events of the Junior Grand Prix of Figure Skating Series are live-streamed on the official ISU Junior Grand Prix of Figure Skating YouTube Channel.

  • Grand Prix (GP) - The ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating Series, originally known as the "ISU Champions Series," debuted in 1995 and comprises six international senior events that culminate with the ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating Final. Skaters are invited to these events based on their performance at the previous ISU World Figure Skating Championships. The top 12 skaters/couples are guaranteed two assignments each. Additionally, medalists from the ISU World Junior Figure Skating Championships who have transitioned to the senior level and are age-eligible may also be selected.

Competitors accrue points in their Grand Prix events to qualify for the ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating Final, with only the top six skaters/couples in each discipline earning a spot.

For the 2024/25 season, selection criteria include seeding based on results from the ISU World Figure Skating Championships 2024. Skaters/couples placing 1st to 6th are seeded into two events, while those placing 7th to 12th are selected for two events. Additionally, skaters with top 24 Season Best Scores from the 2023/24 season and those ranked in the top 24 of the ISU World Standings may also receive invitations. Medalists from the ISU World Junior Figure Skating Championships and Junior Grand Prix Final winners are eligible if they meet senior age criteria (at least 16 years old by July 1, 2023).

To compete in an ISU Grand Prix event, skaters/couples must achieve a minimum total score in the 2023/24 or current 2024/25 season in an ISU event (Grand Prix, Junior Grand Prix, Championships) or a Challenger Series event. Exceptions apply for host country skaters, previously ranked skaters, or split-ranked couples returning with new partners.

Additionally, major international events include:

  • European Figure Skating Championships

  • Four Continents Figure Skating Championships

  • World Junior Figure Skating Championships

  • World Figure Skating Championships
